Porter Robinson Presents: Virtual Self

New Side Project Featuring unique music style self dubbed "Neo-Trance"

Virtual Self has been on of the most exciting story lines in the final quarter of 2017. After his collaborative Shelter project with Madeon Porter buckled down to start a one of a kind story about his new moniker, Virtual Self. The alias represents an in depth narrative about two mysterious and unique characters. The most being released under the Virtual Self name is all over the place with the common theme of emotion. Each track is unique and ranges from the bass to original trance inspired arrangements.

The EP adds three new songs to the first two singles of Ghost Voices & Eon Break: Particle Arts, a.i.ngel (Become God), and Key.

The opening track, “Particle Arts,” contains many of the same elements as the previously released “EON BREAK,” which closes the EP. Rather than look at this as a lack of creativity, I see it as more of a beginning/end dichotomy and representative of the EP’s sound being somewhat cyclical. “Particle Arts” is followed by “Ghost Voices” and then “a.i.ngel (Become God).”

“a.i.ngel (Become God)” is one of the more interesting tracks on the EP – not that they aren’t all. The style bounces around from trance to breaks to drum & bass and everything in between, serving as a perfect middle-point for the EP, encompassing a sort of impossibility of classification.

Next up is “Key,” which relies heavily on the melody provided by the soft pads and piano throughout the track. It seems to be more of a happy and carefree song than any of the others on the EP. And finally, the EP is end capped by Virtual Self’s debut single, “EON BREAK,” a wild and chaotic ride through DDR history.

Virtual Self’s debut performance took place on December 8th in Brooklyn and was evidently a huge success. Not only did the show sell out within minutes, but the venue changed to a larger club to accommodate more curious fans.  All attendees had nothing but positive insights to share after the show so let’s hope one Porter will bring his Virtual Self project to China for us to see someday!

My name's Anthony, a 27 year old from California thats balls deep in electronic music. After going to my first rave [EDC] way back when, I was forever changed. I'm all about DJing, producing and always on the hunt for new talent and organizing parties. I'm a sucker for anything with a fat bassline whether its Techno, G-house, or dubstep, I don't discriminate.
